Siesta Key Beach: #2 Most Desirable Beach in U.S.A.

Stephen Leatherman, also known as Dr. Beach, has named Siesta Beach in Sarasota the nation’s second-best beach for 2010.

It’s the second year in a row Siesta Beach has placed second in the annual ranking.

Siesta Beach gets high marks for its public access, 99.9 percent pure quartz sand, and balance between natural beauty and recreation, Sarasota County Parks and Recreation General Manager John McCarthy said in a release.

“With some of the finest, whitest sand in the world, Siesta Beach has clear, warm waters that serve for ideal swimming,” Leatherman wrote in his review. “This beach is great for volleyball and other types of recreational fitness.”

Leatherman, director for coastal research at Florida International University in Miami, bills himself “America’s Foremost Beach Expert.” He has ranked the country’s top 10 beaches for 20 years.

His beach rating system, including 50 criteria to measure beach quality on a sliding scale from one to five, is designed to provide an objective appraisal of major public recreational areas.

Coopers Beach in Southampton, N.Y., ranks No. 1 on Dr. Beach’s 2010 Best Beaches in America.

Caladesi Island State Park in Dunedin ranked No. 1 in 2008.

Siesta Beach, which draws more than 1 million visitors each year, is one of 14 beaches spanning roughly 35 miles of beachfront owned by Sarasota County.
